The Amish over here do a lot of planting without machines, they really know how to plant stuff and getting the soil quality of land to increase.
My dad has been growing plants not as a business but just to eat, relax, and whatnot. So far it's been pretty fun. And healthy too! It's always fun to take nearly useless dirt and turn it into very rich dirt.

Yeah. It can be.
But, most of the "farmers" around here, are the ones who grow grains/canola/etc for food sold around the country. So yeah, job.
Even the Mennonites around here have machines! Or such. XDD
... This totally goes back to "what exactly is a farmer". D:
