I was severely disappointed when I first got this game. I even preordered and got the plush chicken or whatever! When I played it, it just didn't feel the same as HMDS. I'll give it this: the graphics were much better, but navigating your character was much harder! Too bad my bro lost my DS, so I can't play anymore to see if my opinion changed. (I'll probably end up buying a new one with pokemon black since that wasthe game that was in it when it was lost. Ugh, I still despise that kid for this!)
Your thoughts on the subject?

IoH is really bad. From controls to farming, everything was broken.
Farming was horrible. Too horrible. The island was uninteresting, the people were too.
SI only slightly fixed the controls. It feels like a really cheap fix, like the ones that people do with cheats sometimes. They changed the controls so you can use keys, but the entire system remained the same, so it just didn't felt right.
SI also gave a faster starts, but everything is basically the same. It felt like a patch that changed a few things, nothing more.
Farming wouldn't be so bad if they were more specific and had some kind of helping system. Something like how Simfarm had, a window that would shows the water levels and stuff like that. But in IoH nah, you are left all on your own, with a farmer that is so dumb that can't even look at the ground and crops to see how they are doing.
The graphics were better, but everything looked bland, and the animations weren't that good (jumping animation for example is horrible). GrB and ToTT improved the graphics (at first it looks the same, but it's actually better) and covered those flaws.
BTW, note this. I didn't like HM:DS as well, yet I do find it better than IoH.
HM:DS just "failed" in many aspects, abused in lots of areas *coughminingcough* and felt overall lazy. Not to mention the complete time and stamina imbalance.
It did made some innovations, but they weren't as good as the ones on older games. This is, good ideas poorly applied.

HMDS had soo many stupid glitches too. A lot of the problems involved the bottom screen, like text being not properly aligned or something always bugged me.
And the million dollar glitch in winter for fishing was epic xD

I was actually talking with bugs/glitches aside. XDDD
I played versions with bug fixes, even though I did got a couple of odd ones.
I think that it was on my first run on that game that I ragequit because I lost almost all of my money, and I had almost 1M, from Sprites fishing all year long (no glitch. XD). It was mostly because something retarded happened on the mine (I don't remember what by now) and it made me faint, and since people on Marvelous are too lazy, there isn't any kind of warning about losing almost all the money that you have. I was already getting bored of that game, so it was the last drop.
Tried a couple of more times, but the game was just boring by then, and the game just asks you so much to exploit the save system that it's not even funny.

o.o Oh, still, glitches are fun xD
Hmm, nothing bad ever has happened to me. And if it did, it's because my AR decided to freeze up on me if I decided to use it with HMDS xDD

Well, being a while since I played it a have played SI, I can definitely say that I really enjoyed IoH. The ONLY thing I have against it are the touch controls (which aren't even that bad...). I liked playing it a lot more than SI becuase I think IoH has a GREAT plot and story line unlike SI (which seems more like a routine each day in the game I would have to keep going to different islands over and over...).

I played it awhile ago, tried to like it but didn't. I bought Rune Factory 3 the same day, and because of the letdown I got with IoH I didn't pick up RF3 until a year later! I'm still playing it, love it. I might pick up IoH one more time just to give it a fair chance...I don't think I even played a while season before putting it down. The controls just bothered me and it was too repetitive, even for a HM game. I felt like I had to do too much at the beginning with little gratification or payoff. :(
